Pets Evacuation, Transportation Standards Act
(PETS)
On October 6, 2006, a new law, the Pets Evacuation, Transportation Standards Act (PETS), required that pets be addressed in Federal disaster planning. As a revision to the Stafford Act the law also made Federal funding available to enhance preparedness efforts for animals at the state level. The law also requires that state and local Disaster Preparedness plans include provisions for household pets and service animals. In 2007, the Connecticut legislature passed CGS 07-11 which requires that every CT municipality make planning for pets a component of their disaster planning. This law is sometimes referred to as the "CT Pets Act."
